I wouldn't have referred to her as chubby, not even close. In fact, I'd suggest she was had an ideal figure and anyone typically thinner or skinnier would be perhaps regarded as other than typical.
Isn't it funny how tastes change, I mean in terms of the popular preferences rather than personal. Nowadays, slim, slender bordering on thin or skinny is the norm and has been for decades whereas historically chubby or fat women were seen as the preferred partner.
I think the typical explanation being skinny or thin was seen as a sign of an unhealthy childhood and coming from a background of poverty, someone who grew up never having enough to eat therefore inferior breeding stock. A fuller, fatter figure spoke of background much greater in resources, wealth, food so much more an attractive proposition for marriage.
In our modern times where even the less well off groups in society rarely have to struggle to get enough to eat that link between body size and social standing just isn't relevant. If anything being overweight or obese is much more associated with lower incomes nowadays.
If I had to suggest why the change from the fuller figure being the ideal to the almost caricature-like skinny, ultra thin type I would hazard a guess that it began in the 60s with some of those famous waif-like models that were all the rage back then which possibly influenced all those tall, long legged, thin supermodels of the 80s and beyond. Who knows though, I'm probably way off the mark as per usual lol.
